聊聊五幾

2004年去檳城找Tay，玩了7天，Tay也整整請了5天假帶我遊覽檳城，當時就覺得檳城是一個又古又新的城市，許多二次世界大戰前的房子都完好如初的被保留下來。這個古城也是一個民族大熔爐的城市，馬來人、印度人和華人，還有許多金髮藍眼的外國渡假者。

檳城為馬來西亞最大的天然海港，也是大馬第二大城市，2008年7月7日列入世界文化遺產城市名錄。

十八世紀末，從英國東印度公司向吉打蘇丹租借檳城，在英國殖民地時期，英政府鼓勵移民，因此而成就了檳城民族融合的現況，其中，華人比例過半，馬來人次之，還有一成的印度人。

中式廟宇、清真寺、印度教與教堂等等共同存在，是一個多元而且也處處使人迷戀如此多變的城市。

自從被列入世界文化遺產(UNESCO) 城市之後，管制區內的房屋無論是新建或是整修，都必須符合一定的法規已維持舊式建築風格，而居民也因此無法享受新式建築所帶來的舒適性和方便性。

也因為如此才得以保持古城區的風貌。但雖然做了這麼多努力來維護喬治鎮這座文化遺產。

「檳城的旅遊業卻始終不是很發達，這是因為檳城由反對黨執政，因此受到中央政府處處打壓甚至到了無所不用其極的地步，不但減少飛往檳城的飛機航班，連在旅遊宣傳上也刻意忽略檳城。」

網路上有這一段文字，可見一斑，沒去過檳城的人不知道檳城美在哪？好在哪？身邊的朋友覺得馬來西亞並沒有很好玩，那是因為他沒有去體會跟感受每個城市的不同與文化風俗。

雖然這次帶著Amber無法好好深刻的感受檳城這城市建築、文化、景觀的美，下一次好好探索。

Holiday hotspots: where to go in 2014

Once George Town was named a Unesco world heritage site in 2008, the capital of the Malaysian state of Penang began changing into one of south-east Asia's hottest destinations. Penangites are renovating everything from Chinese mansions to old factories, which means there's something for all budgets – delicious street food or fine dining; funky hostels or boutique hotels. The latest spot is the Three Sixty Degree Sky Bar. Follow drinks there with either a plate of spicy duck soup from one of the stalls on Kimberley Street or gourmet Penang Nyonya cuisine atSeven Terraces, the restaurant everyone wants to be seen at. In addition to the month-long George Town festival (1-31 August), this year the city will host the first south-east Asian edition of Tropfest (20-25 January, free), the world's biggest short film festival.
